A Fulani Herdsman, Mohammed Abdulkadire, jumped into River Benue located at Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The deceased was said to have commited suicide after he lost 200cows out of 500 he has. The cows died due to hunger and lack of water.
The Benue State Government, in an attempt to end dispute between farmers and herdsman banned open grazing in the state on 1st November 2017. The anti-grazing ended the dispute but didn't favour the herdsmen, making them to relocate to other states were open grazing is permitted.
Speaking to newsmen, the National Coordinate of Miyietti Allah Cattle Breaders Association of Nigeria Benue State chapter, Garus Gololo, said that the implimentation of the anti-open grazing law caused Fulani herdsmen a loss of about 700cows which all died due to poor feeding and inaccessibility of water.
Speaking about the man who commited suicide, he said, "The man killed himself because there was no place for the cows to graze. He wanted to relocate to Awe local Government in Nasarawa State but information got to us that the area was occupied and no herdsman should cross over to the area.
"We are calling on the Federal Government to intervene to quickly make provision for herdsmen in Benue State before they lose everything they have". He added.
