A 34- years old vegetable seller, Chukuwma Okoro opted for robbery in other to pay wife's dowry.

Okoro embraced robbery in other to pay the sum of N300,000 for wife's dowry which was demanded by her parents. Okoro's wife left home for unknown reason. Neighbours and friends made jest of him for not being able to pay wife's dowry. The parents of the girl also pressured him and were hell-bent on the N300,000. The whole situation and the fear of loosing his wife to another man frustrated the vegetable seller and he opted for robbery.

According to okoro, he said, as a vegetable seller, there was no way he could raise the money to pay for the dowry. He accused his wife and her family for pushing him into robbery.

Okoro made this known to the police after he was caught in an attack.

He said, "I wanted to pay my wife's dowry but I do not have the N300,000 demanded by her family.

"It is my wife and her family that pushed me into it, I have never stolen in my life, this is the first time. She ran away from my house three weeks ago and has been begging me that she wants to come back.

"Since I love her so much and do not want her family to give her to another man that was why I started looking for money by all means to pay her dowry so that she could come back to my house.

"There is no way I can get that N300,000 to pay her dowry, that was why I tried to rob and this is the first time I will be doing it", he said.

It was learnt that okoro monitored a sales girl who works with beer production company at Adebola, Ondo State. The girl was taking N550,000 proceeds of the day's sales to the bank. Okoro paid an Okada rider who gave him a ride. They went before the girl and waited. He attacked the girl but an attempt to take the money proved abortive as she resisted him vehemently and raised alarm. Okoro pulled his pistol and fired the girl three times but the pistol failed to expel bullet. The okada rider on seeing this, ran away with the bike, leaving okoro behind. Youths who watched from a close distance, apprehended him, beat him and tried burning him with tyres. The intervention of the police saved him from being lynched

When asked how he got the information that the sale's girl was going to the bank.

He said, "I got all the information I needed. I was told the amount to be taken to the bank, when the salesgirl would leave the office, the route she would take and the bank she was heading to.

"So I decided to engage an Okada rider for a fee and he parked where we were able to see the salesgirl when she left the office and as soon as it was safe I struggled to snatch the bag containing the money from her. But the girl was so brave that while I struggled to snatch the bag she pushed me off the Okada causing me and the Okada rider to fall.

"I brought out a pistol from my pocket and fired two shots but the gun refused to expel the bullets. The Okada man then fled the scene and I became helpless which made some youths and others around the area to overpower me and I was arrested.

Prading the criminal, the State Police Image Maker, Femi Joseph said,
